“Are we there yet?”
“Stop kicking your seat!”
“Daaaad, she hit me!”
Yes, we all recognize them: Sound bites from a family
vacation.
Of course the sound of minor family squabbles bouncing
around inside an air-conditioned mini-van is one thing.
Sharing them with all the passengers on a long airplane
flight is quite another.

FAMILY FLYING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With my family already talking about our next vacation, I
hit the internet recently to find some tips on keeping my
sanity while airborne with my children.
I found Hotel Fun 4 Kids, a company created to promote
vacations and travel for families. In addition to offering
destination ideas, lists of child-friendly hotels and
attractions and lots of ads, the firm’s Website -
http://www.hotelfun4kids.com – has lots of worthwhile travel
tips.
This week, I culled some having to do with air travel for
children:
* Make sure your carry-on bag is really a “Carry-on”.
Airlines are becoming increasing vigilant in sizing
allowances for carry on luggage. That can be a problem for
parents who aren’t used to traveling with kids because they
tend to over pack. Heck, even travel veterans tend to take
too much stuff when they’ve got the kiddies with them.
There’s nothing wrong with being prepared, you just want to
minimize the number of surprises – and therefore, delays -
at the airport.
* Book seats as far in advance as possible. Ask for seats
near the washroom or bulk head, and make sure you get a
window seat. Seats near the washroom will provide some in-
flight entertainment for the kids and some distraction for
the people lining up to use them.
* Avoid air travel if child is under 3 months of age – air
quality has become a concern and young infants are more
susceptible to infections. Plus, traveling with new babies,
especially on a plane, is no fun at all – for you, the child
or the other passengers
* Space is limited in what you can bring with you, so pack
carefully.
* Tell your children what to expect, what you expect of them
and to respect other passengers. Don’t let them kick other
seats or fight with siblings. Ask them to use their quite
inside voices on the plane.
* If possible, avoid the busiest days and times to fly so
you and your child will have adequate space.
* If you select your own airplane seats, be sure to choose
adjacent seats for yourself and your child.
* Supervise your children when using washrooms on the
airplane and in the airport.
* If your kids are old enough, give them a watch with a
timer and they can time the flight and calculate how much
time is left.
* Dress comfortably and take an extra change of clothes for
each kid. If you are flying to a warm destination, put
shorts and a t-shirt under a track suit. This makes the
holiday fun and provides a distraction when it is time to
change. Have a extra bag inside your carryon to put the
clothes in.
SAFETY SEATING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Book your children’s meal well in advance, and make sure
you get food your child will eat.
If your kid is fussy, bring along some healthy snacks. That
way, instead of forcing him or her to finish the airline
vegetables on their tray, you can quietly fill them up with
something else.
* If you have a child younger than 5, seriously consider
purchasing a car seat that will work on an airplane.
All children who weigh 40 pounds or less should be in a
safety seat, according to the national SAFE KIDS campaign.
Some kids will balk at the idea, and the seats can be a pain
to lug around, but they do make air travel safer. Clear air
turbulence can happen at any time when you least expect it.
* Before you buy a safety seat, check to make sure it is
approved for airline use.
* Do not fly with your child on your lap.
* Children should ride in travel seats facing the rear of
the aircraft until they are at least 12 months old and weigh
at least 20 pounds. Rear-facing infant seats generally fit
best on airplanes.
* Keep in mind that belt-positioning booster seats, backless
child restraint systems and certain harnesses cannot be
used. They will be labeled with the statement “This
Restraint is Not Certified for Use in Aircraft.” If you
bring one to the airport, you’ll have to leave it there.
* The child safety seat must be installed in a window seat,
so other passengers are not blocked from exiting the row.

GUM AND GAMES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Don’t leave home without a favorite blanket or snuggly
toy.
* If possible, book your flights during nap times so you can
get some rest or be able to watch the movie.
* Bring lots of distractions. Books, small games, puzzles -
stuff that doesn’t take up little space, but can occupy
little minds for a long time.
* Ask attendants if the airline offers any surprises or
treats for kids.
* Take frequent walks through the plane to relieve boredom.
* To help avoid pain in children’s ears from air pressure,
have children drink or chew during take off and landing, or
have small children eat crackers.
* If you need to change planes to make a connecting flight,
most airlines can help you transport your child, luggage and
safety seat if arranged in advance.
